Dappled evening light breaks through trees bathing two lovers sharing a quiet, profound moment beside a lake. Intriguing, layered subjects were often the focus of the Belgian painter, illustrator and writer, Amédée Ernest Lynen. A pupil at the Brussels Academy with P. Lauters and J. Stallaerts he wont on, in 1880, to co-found the artistic group L'Essor after it had separated from the academy. An original member of its successor Pour l'Art, also founded, in 1895, the Compagnie du Diable-au-corps, an artistic association noted for its evenings of theatre and poetry. In recognition of his contribution to the local avant-garde scene, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium acquired, in 1903, two of his pieces. A retrospective his works was shown by the Cercle Artistique et Littéraire in the Vauxhall, Brussels in 1930.
