Smoke drifts from the chimneys above the rooftops and towards the cathedral of Ritleng native and much-loved Strasbourg. Born there he also studied there from 1892-7 before moving to Paris for two years, and then furthering his training in Munich from 1903-08. A proud and renowned member of the Alsatian artistic community, he became a member of the Cercle de Saint-Léonard, a group dedicated to maintain the identity of Alsace after its annexation in 1871. From 1933-39 he was the principal of the Fine Arts Academy in Strasbourg.
