Smoke drifts from the door of a hut sitting beside a lake that boatmen punt their way across. A raking evening light catches the water that lies beneath snow-capped mountains. Known for his romantic, Italianate landscapes, Schreiner studied painting as a private student of Wilhelm Camphausen, Johann Wilhelm Lindlar and Andreas Achenbach. Having travelled in Germany, Switzerland and Italy he settled in Dusseldorf, where he became a member of the the progressive Malkasten artists’ association.
