In many of Emy Rogge’s paintings she is seeking to capture the nature of light and particularly its movement over water - very much a continuation of the aims of the Impressionists. In the present work there is a certain nostalgic, halcyon quality as if Rogge is trying to capture the emotion of the long, ungraspable summer days of her youth.

Rogge came from a family of artists in Leipzig. After studying under Gerhard Bakenhus in Kreyenbrück, she became a member of the Oldenburg Artists' Association. In the 1920’s she was drawn to the town of Worpswede and the allure of the nature around it, which she endeavoured to portray for the remainder of her life.
