Here, Schiener meticioulouly depicts all the beauty and serenity of the Rhine in the late afternoon sunlight. The great river is set against the backdrop of the Siebengebirge mountains, which are partly in shadow and partly catching the last of the sun’s rays.
Depsite being self-taught Jakob Schiener became a painter of great renown in his his area and beyond. While well-regarded for his views of his native Siegerland, he was also noted for his depicition of Cologne itself, in particualr his aerial views of the city. He exhibited at the World's Fairs in Paris in 1867 and Vienna in 1873.
